I first heard the lyrics of Plastic Jesus from the following quote on Bash.org:

<skippy> Plastic Jesus he’s my fellow, comes in red and sometimes yellow….ridin’ on the dashboard of my car.
<skippy> I don’t care if it rains or freezes,I still got my plastic Jesus…..
<skippy> He don’t slip and he don’t slide…mainly cuase he’s magnetized…..

Dashboard Deity

Plastic Jesus, he’s my fellow
Comes in red and sometimes yellow
Sitting on the dashboard of my car

Don’t care if it rains or freezes
‘Cause I’ve got my plastic Jesus
Weather will not my pal’s beauty mar

He can’t slip & he can’t slide
Mainly ’cause he’s magnetized
Bobble-toy who died to save our sins.

I found mine by the road one day
Now over me does he survey
Bouncing out the tales of where he’s been.

So when heading down life’s highway
Do your best to see things my way
This synthetic savior is your man

Nevermore be sad or dreary
His strong grip will not grow weary
Plastic Jesus is your diehard fan!

As a Christian, I’m not sure what to think about this……

I mean I don’t understand if this is mocking Jesus or what, cuz if it is I don’t really like it.

It’s a silly poem penned by the atheist who runs this website. =) I suppose you could argue that it’s making light of a figure some regard to be their savior, but I don’t see anything offensive in it, do you?

  3. Chris says:

The figure you refer to I assume is not Jesus Himself but an icon or “bobble toy” Jesus is my savior, not an icon so when anyone says Christians have an icon for a savior instead of Jesus Himself is offensive. I’m a big fan of your work and I follow you on youtube and I thought you wrote this poem so I was just shocked, that’s all :)

The song shows up in the Paul Newman film, Cool Hand Luke. Definitely worth watching.
