The Fight Before Christmas

A silly little poem I wrote for someone. I submitted it in 3rd year Creative Writing class in university.

‘Twas the night before Christmas when right to the village
Bandits were coming! To burn and to pillage!
I grabbed my knife to defend from attack;
Little Susie ran down to the cellar with Jack.

Our two children safe in the storeroom below,
Molly and I headed out through the snow.
The villagers joined us, their weapons held high,
And the smoke of the torches rose right to the sky.

“They’re here!” screamed the watchman, his soul then set free
By the arrows that fell to his perch in a tree.
The first of the bandits dashed into the square!
Their guttural cries sliced like knives through the air.

The villagers were brave and fought a good battle
But soon were surrounded like fattened-up cattle.
The mayor, he surrendered, ‘twas all he could do
The adults were tied up, our sad fate to rue

Then, a bright-coloured sled did appear up above!
The atmosphere filled up with Christmas-y love.
Santa had come back to save the day!
The bandit leader cried out in dismay.

“Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On Cupid! On, Donder and Blitzen!”
The reindeer danced and twirled through the air.
Bandits ran here and bandits ran there.

With a chuckle, Santa rode into the night,
And everyone screamed and cheered with delight.
Christmas was saved, with presents for all.
The village commenced with their Yuletide ball.
